The origin...

Summary

The origin. Made for the I'm Linux contest. I wanted to stay away from live footage, or any usual representation. Instead I looked for a more abstract form, trying to touch symbols (they tend to be stronger). Everything is symbolic in this video and has a purpose, from the very beginning with the cell/egg form representing the beginning of life, the metamorphosis, multiplication, then fusion to build something better and stronger (only with collaboration you can go higher), etc. I wanted to give some drama to the voice, beeing unable to cast someone due to short deadline (only had 5 days of work ahead), I had to use my own. Would have prefered a more deep one. I was alone for the hole project (animation, sound, design, etc), so it was kind of a hard deadline on top of my daily job, but the lack of sleep wasn't that hard, the important thing here is to collaborate and share. I hope everyone will enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed doing it... long life to Linux and to everyone aboard. A.

I thought this was really very cool.

Thanks for the nice comment, I'm glad that you liked it. If people have any question on how this little short movie was made I will be more than happy to give some insight. A.

This movie is incredible! I wish you the best for the contest! What software did you use to create it if it's not a too personal question? I really enjoy the black smoke effect that disolves in the background. Thumbs up!

  • matteo Said:

awesome! It just needs a new voice over ps: please give us some "making of"

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Thanks for the kind comments people, Nitrate : I only used three softwares in here : After Effects, Pixelmator, Soundbooth. I first had a very ambitious project with a lot of 3D (using blender and houdini), but timewise it was impossible and on top of that rendertimes wouldn't fit the deadline. So I took the decision to rebuild my hole concept and do it on a more Motion Graphic way (but keeping some of that 3D perspective). matteo : I'm willing to do that, just to give some insight, everything was created on the computer between the three softwares I named in this same post. I had in total with all the nested composition inside compositions more than 200 layers of animation or graphic elements. On the other hand nothing too fancy was used, the smoke effect is real footage just timed right and color corrected to make it fit into the composition. Particles where generated in AE. All the deformations, and random movements where scripted in AE to give it a real life random movement and not hand animated. The rest was just artistic direction to give it the look I was looking for. For the voice, I KNOWWWWWWW !!! :-D I hate my own voice... If I had the time I would have casted someone with a more baritone voice, to sound very deep and profound. Just didn't had the time for it... :-( Thanks again guys A.

Bonjour!

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Nitrane, I will answer you in english so everyone can understand ! I was glad to answer your questions, don't hesitate if you have more I will gladly answer. I will try to make some kind of explanatory making off of this project with screenshots and all... The creation process was kind of chaotic at the beginning, so I won't promise a step by step. For the Final Cut part, it's not a big deal... those are just tools. I use the right tool for my work, and I don't care on wich platform it runs. If there is a Linux version then great I will adopt it as soon as it's out. But sometimes it's not and I have to get on with it... that's the way it works. Where I work I'm kind of the IT guy, so I switched all our servers to Linux, a lot of workstations now are on Linux for the 3D part of the pipeline. But until there isn't an After Effects/Photoshop/Final Cut version on Linux or some kind of equivalent we will be dual booting or running macs. That's in my opinion one of the big steps Linux has to make, get on the creative market but on a more mainstream way, not only specialized studios that have theyre own built in tools... I use already a LOT blender, it's amazing how this project have grown up and is such a mature project. Anyway, I'm talking too much, And thanks for saying that my project deserves the right to represent Linux... Merci pour les gentils commentaires et bonne chance à toi ! A.

  • linux_underpants Said:

"I+YOU+WE=Linux" is a phenomenal slogan! I could do without the 'raise with us'. Maybe change it to 'grow with us'.

  • cfriedt Said:

This video has the best special effects / animation that I have seen yet. I'd like to say 'amazing work' to the author. My only criticism is that it is a bit too dark. I would suggest, that for a finalist entry, have the same excellent animation work, but make the them of the video (perhaps the music) slightly more positive.

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Wow, I'm amazed by the feedback in here... :) linux_underpants : thank you, I wanted and simple yet stylish slogan that could represent the individual, the person next to you and also the community, and come up with that. I'm very happy that you liked it. For the "raise" with us, I had in mind the word "revolution", because in some way Linux stands against commercial, fud, etc. And I like the idea of people getting on their feets after beeing a long time on theyre knees. But I will think about it. cfriedt : Thanks for the nice comments about VFX/Animation ! That makes me feel proud of my work, even if I think it could have been better with more time on the pipeline. For the colors that is due to color compression when you upload online. I will be recording a new voice tonight for the spot (foundation allowed me to do this). So I will be boosting background color a little bit so when I compress it for online use it won't be crashed too dark. Weboide : Merci :-)

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Hello everyone, Thanks for the kind words, I have good news !!! New voice over is up, just sent link to Foundation so I hope it will be online soon, I pushed the colors a little bit so they are clearer with online compression. Let me know what you think about it please. Agustin

  • dylanmccall Said:

Could you, err, make this available in an open format, by any chance? Or, at least, a format that works right under Linux? As I am sure you are aware, the native build of the Flash Player is horrible in Linux - especially in 64-bit Linux. At the moment, in fact, it plain does not work for me. A great deal of clicking tells me that the only way to watch this is with Flash. Oh, and it's proprietary, which does not mesh with your message. Rest assured, I did watch this successfully with Flash in Windows. Awesome job! 5/5 :) I dearly hope this one wins. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the speech at the end. Is "raise with us" a little language glitch, or am I losing touch? Having heard the first 2 seconds of the new one before Flash collapsed, I am hopeful but still a tad uncertain. Can't wait to hear the rest again! The effects are awesome, and I like the classy way you communicate the message. (Without sounding like an over-confident sales person, eg. Ballmer's Windows 1.0 ad which I see duplicated in most other entries). What we NEED is Avery Brooks. Maybe you can hire his voicey services in exchange for pizza or something...

  • justintime03_2 Said:

You know justcallmenobody, I think I've picked at a lot of videos on here. I can't stress enough the importance of describing Linux correctly. I know this ad isn't selling breathmints, Nikes, or some obscure product. This ad is perfect. All I can say is... damn good job. I hope I see this ad on tv in time for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala... My gf uses Photoshop CS4 in Kubuntu (8.10) and it works fine. I know alot of people have been having trouble, but for the few who have it working great in Linux I think it's a sign that Wine should have this area filled in MAYBE a year. Who knows. Top pic video dude, good luck.

  • justcallmenobody Said:

dylanmccall : All the other videos on this site are Flash based players at the moment... I don't get your request, but after the end of the contest I will put online a downloadable version encoded in various formats. Thanks for the nice comments, but I'm not sure about Avery... I don't think pizza will be enough for him ;-) And I'm very happy with the voice of my friend Sanya... don't you think her voice is delicious ? :-D justintime : Thanks, I'm glad you like it and that you feeled the message as I was trying to communicate it. Me too I hope to win on this one ;-) Take care everyone ! A.

  • dylanmccall Said:

Aha! There's a QuickTime version to download on the bottom right of the page for this new one on Vimeo. Here's a direct link. What I mean with my request is that most other videos have an alternative download available beyond the embedded Flash player. Sorry, I don't know how that works since I've never used the video upload on this site before :) If I could change my rating to something higher than 5/5 with this new version, I would. Well done, Sanya!

  • LeJade Said:

justcallmenobody, it does look very very PRO. Its awesome!! Du beau boulot mec, serieux!

  • justcallmenobody Said:

  • bit32 Said:

just amazing. having production skills like that while also being the 'it guy' is some past time ;) new voice is great and i+you+we is so simple but a perfect fit. hope the slogan at the very least gets picked up. my one comment would be 'raise with us' doesn't really make much sense. 'grow with us' is pretty good though. otherwise. well done. easily both the best 'message' and video i've seen so far!

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Bit32, I will start to feel embarassed with all the nice words you people post up here. Thanks again to you and all the people who voted and commented on this little production. I'm please that you liked the slogan, I wanted to find something simple, short, and representing the community spirit... I'm unable to change the texting right now since we are on votation for the contest, but when I choosed "raise" I had in mind this kind of revolution Linux is, and the concept on the way it's developped and maintained, the way it has spread around the world... and since it also touches governments, schools, individuals, I really liked the "revolution" concept. "Grow" is also a nice word, but then I would rather say something like "Lets all grow together" (very rough idea of course, I would have to work a little more on this one). Take care man. A.

  • Antony Said:

Good vídeo, but if linux is good why dont you made it using linux? Someone will ask the linux comunity about it.. Is Linux not ready? It is a free software contest...

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Antony : This is the kind of non constructive comments that is a bad example to the community. Just show me the tool on the free software side that is at least close to a product like After Effects. You can search, you wont be able to find any... And don't name Jahshaka, because it's not even close to it. When you work as a professionnal you use the tool that does what you need, without beeing religious about it. It's all about getting the result you want in the amount of time that you have. I use a lot of tools under linux : Houdini, Maya, Gimp, Blender, etc. And I already posted that one of the very important fields where open source should do some serious inroads are art tools. Go and say to the guy who does 3D sculpting at the studio where I work that he can only use Linux and maybe Blender for 3D Sculpting ? He's gonna laugh at you, because he uses the tool that better suits his work and blender right now can't even touch the amount of poly and fluid work Zbrush or Mudbox can do. There is a time where is not what you prefer, but what does it better. Don't get me wrong, I love blender and use it A LOT ! When a replacement to After Effects will be available on the open source community I will embrace it and even make tutorials for it. Do you really beleive that Microsoft commercials are only made on computers running Windows ? They are surely cuted and mastered over Final Cut Apple computers, 3D on windows and so on, do you realy think that MS really cares about it ? No, they want the spot out. This contest is about Linux and why "We Are Linux"... it's about community, strenght and sharing... and NOT "free" software. You are the first one having this negative attitude. Just my 2 cents. A.

  • bproffitt Said:

I never saw anything about it being a free software contest. And I should know. :) BKP

  • xamox Said:

This better win. I hate windows myself, but I don't believe bashing windows or mac people will help win over a fanbase. This is video is very well done production wise and it makes you curious about what linux is. We've all heard the BSOD jokes and such, but I think trying to be religious about and going door to door forcing linux down peoples throat will make them not want to try it, but make them curious about and they may just give it a shot.

  • Antony Said:

Dont get me wrong... I meant that to say we are linux, we should at least to use it. I use linux and I hate when someone tell that windows is better and then I would hate if some of my friends tell me that there is a good video about linux at the internet buuut, made on windows...See? I was just talking about it...

  • justcallmenobody Said:

First : Windows was never used to create this spot... Second : I use Linux A LOT ! on the server side and also on the desktop side, and also for my creative needs, read my post. Third : You still don't get my point. I told you, you use what does the job for you, if the tool is not available to me under Linux, I will use wathever OS get the job done. Period, I won't let any sort of subjective consideration get in the way with the quality of the work I want/have to deliver. You don't have to feel bad, it's just work and tools. I wanted to make a cool spot for Linux (and I hope I did), I had to make choices due to the very short time I had to accomplish this. I had to be fast, clever and make the right choices to have a pro look (and I hope it looks pro). What should I do ? Let some bad choices break the hole project because the tools aren't there yet or not ready ? No, because that way we will end up always having something average. You use what's best suited... and what you best know ! I'm working on a project right now, and I'm using Blender a lot, because it was the right choice to tackle the objectives I had planned. I should add also : Linux is about beeing open to things, to each other, and even Windows. Linux is not about rejecting Windows, it'as about embracing things. My 2 cents. A.

  • Said:

I think this might be a bit difficult to grasp, and I can also see problems with the thick accent, though I understood it pretty well. Overall I like the presentation, though, and I think this is the strongest video of the finalists.

  • c0534942 Said:

I love the voice and I really enjoyed the style (reminded me of a movie trailer). I think this is the best video and it illustrates what linux is about - leaving room for a lot of curiosity - instead of illustrating whats wrong with apple or windows, which in my opinion has become very old and cliche since apple entered the market. I love its uniqueness and I hope it is picked to promote linux.

  • Shunnabunich Said:

I think the voiceover is beautiful, sexy and mysterious, and thus matches the video exquisitely well. I don't think her accent was particularly thick or unclear, either, but of course that's subjective. My suggestion concerning the slogan is to try "rise up" in the place of "raise" if your aim is to allude to revolution. Something like "let's grow together" isn't really bad, per se, but my initial feeling from that is a much more happy/cutesy/Web 2.0 feeling, which might seem incongruous with the rest of the spot. Anyway, absolutely stunning work! Makes me wanna run out and find a PPC-compatible distro right now and plunge myself into its tantalizingly mysterious world. :)

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Aldrenean : Thank you, for the voice it doesn't sound weird to me but maybe it's just a region or feeling thing. c0534942 : I'm happy that you liked the voice, I will tell Sanya (my friend) that a lot of people enjoyed her voice :D I'm glad you understood what I wanted to do... or better say what I didn't wanted to do : always measuring up against Apple or Microsoft. I hope it will be picked too... ;-) Shunnabunich : I agree with the "rise up", but I must admit that I finished this very very late in the night, and my mind wasn't all that clear at that moment. "Rise up" would have been better, maybe later on I will be allowed to change that little detail. I'm happy that you like it and what are you waiting for to get that PPC distro ??? :D Peace everyone, A.

  • theguardian Said:

This video (the version with the girl voice) was uploaded -after- the entry period.

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Theguardian : more than one person uploaded corrected versions of their entries after the "entry period", because of this I asked FIRST the people who organize the contest if I was able to submit a corrected version with a new voice and they told me I could do it, I have the emails proving it, and it was them that relinked to the right video. I really don't see what you are trying to prove or point... But your attitude makes me quite sad. A.

  • theguardian Said:

Raise with us?? Looks like Darth Vader lol

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Laugh if you want, but I won't take to seriously the comments made by someone who became a member just 40 minutes ago with the only purpose of bashing things down. Go somewhere else, we don't need people like you here, A.

  • Speed8ump Said:

First, I must say: Wow. By far the best of the finalists. The production quality really makes this shine. Second, I think the problem with "raise with us" is that raise is normally used as "raise [noun]", so you raise the roof, raise your voice, raise a question, etc. In this context "rise up with us" is the next closest thing to convey the revolutionary meaning you intend (you might rise up in protest of something). Another reason to avoid "raise" here is that it sounds exactly like "raze" which means to tear down (you might raze a building). This is fertile pun territory, but hard to navigate without sounding awkward (even for native speakers). If you *really* want to use "raise with us" you have to build up to it. You would have to have several (probably 3 or 4) uses of phrases like: "raising the bar", "raising security", "raise the stakes", etc. Then you can probably use "raise with us" and people will get it. Anyway, just my two cents. Great work.

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Speed8ump : Thanks for the nice comments, and already people told about the raise with us, we will see how it turns ! And if it's selected if people prefer to keep it this way or to change it... we will see. But thanks for the advice, and peace ! A.

  • crxssi Said:

Wow! Without a doubt, this video is the best of all the finalists! The voice, the graphics, the colors, the energy, the fluidity, everything is wonderful... well, except the phrase "raise with us", which doesn't mean anything in English. It sounds like a translation error. I would suggest one of the following instead: So come, and.. 1) Evolve with us 2) Join us 3) Join with us 4) Grow with us 5) Team up with us Or something like that. Good luck... I hope you win! (PS- I need to note that this Vimeo video was the only entry I was unable to watch under Linux + Firefox + Flash 9.0r48... I had to go elsewhere... would be nice to have a Youtube link somewhere)

  • justcallmenobody Said:

crxssi : Thanks, glad you liked it ! :D I see the raise with us bring a lot of debate :-P For the vimeo problem I don't know... :-( I don't have troubles with it, I already tryed with google but the codec encryption insert a lot of glitches so I prefered to deliver quality. The vote system seems to be down... Thanks again ! A.

  • blinkiz Said:

This is great. The best one. I would really like a version 2 of this one. Needs to be fine tuned this one. I don't like the "raise with us" for example. But this one has a good ground to make something beautiful. More about the evolution theme I think..

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Thanks blinkiz, but I guess it wasn't enough or what the jury was looking for... the winner was Tweeto and even if it makes me sad :-) , props to him, I hope he will enjoy his trip to Japan. Peace A.

  • blinkiz Said:

You should release the source code of this one. After a while we will probably see a bunch of forks doing amazing stuff whit this one. Simple, let the community play with it!

  • defsdoor Said:

I love this. The I+you+we=Linux slogan is quirky but brilliant - it really works and I want a banner of it for my website now! :) As for the video - well - it gives me shivers when I watch it. It's somehow organic and really touches me somewhere.

  • justcallmenobody Said:

defsdoor : I'm glad you liked the spot and that it provoques such things on you, that's the best artist prize, people feeling things. For the banner I beleive it would have to wait since my video wasn't picked, I suppose the message from Tweeto is the one that will be used. Peace, A.

  • gerymate Said:

It's quite annoying that while it is about free software, I have to download Adobe's non-free Flash in order to view it :-(. At least an OGG formatted downloadable would be nice!

  • justcallmenobody Said:

gerymate : I used Vimeo for the playback online because it allows me better definition and Youtube encoding system was inserting random glitches on my video. So I had to chose and I prefered quality for everyone. A downloadable version will be soon available with a little signature on it. A.

  • chainz Said:

It's great! My first impression was that is was made in blender, too bad it wasn't - but it's still cool. And no worries, your voice fits here perfectly!

Chainz : It's not mine anymore :D it's the one from a friend of mine Sanya. But thanks for the props ! Take care, A.

  • ssn Said:

Congratulations! This is a great, powerful and immersing video. Both concept and aesthetics are top-notch. As for the tools used, I don't care. This video is not about sticking linux in places you do not feel comfortable with, right?

  • Voltaire Said:

Man, that Video gave me Goose Bumps. The last time I had this with a Linux-Related Video was with the Prodigy Linux IBM Commercial. ;) Really well done. It's plain but really nice for the eye. And the message it carries is exactly the Point I like about GNU/Linux. And I really respect your Opinion that even Linux-People (Devs and Users) keep on measuring up against Apple and MS. I think the same as you. That is absolutely unnecessary. We should enjoy the wonderful Concept of Linux, OpenSource and Free Software more. Just as you did and show us with your Video. The Voice was beautiful. So a +1 on compliments for Sanya from me too. I'd be really interested in additional "Merchandise" of your Video as well. Like Wallpapers, Banners, Animated Wallpapers and a High Resulution Version. For me your Video is the real #1 in this Contest. ;)

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Voltaire, Thanks for all those great comments, and I'm glad you think as me that we must stop measuring up against companies like MS or Apple. We just have to enjoy it and pass the word... the rest will come. About the "Merchandise"... well, we will have to see with the foundation. Since they picked another video as the winner, maybe that's the one they want to represent this "We Are Linux" thing. I sent today an HD OGG version to the Foundation, it should be up soon I beleive. Thanks for telling me that I'm the real #1... I will be probably enter another video linux contest, let's hope I will have more luck on that one. Peace, A.

  • bproffitt Said:

Yes, thanks to Agustin's efforts, an Ogg version of this video is now available (see list of source files under video above). Brian Proffitt Community Manager

  • paul TheUnverified Said:

"Raise with us" is a problem. I understand what you are trying to say. "Revolt with us" would be the most literal translation, but is a bit confrontational. My suggestions are: "Rise up with us" --(I think most people might find this abstract and confusing .) "Grow with us" --(This suggests obtaining more of a presence in the world which is okay.) "Be free with us" --(I think this is closer to the concept behind Linux and OSS.) "Break free with us" --(This suggests the action of revolt without being confrontational and it establishes the concept of freedom. My fav.) And I must say, this is an excellent video.

  • ranganr Said:

Perfect 10 I can understand why the LinuxAD made the race, it's straight and you can't miss it. Your clip runs emotions and is simply of another kind and way better but not everybody's darling. The soundtrack, altered voice and the graphics keeps the viewer balanced between fear and hope. "raise with us" gives a decent kick to fear, just to be kicked out by the incredible "I+you+we=Linux". The last sound peace may lead to the question "Are you sure?" But it's better in the whole context of the clip as a smooth fade out. Don't bend and take the uncertain out of it. Keep it mind twisted. That's what makes it unique! Hope to see it in cinemas some day!

  • chainz Said:

I also preferred yours than the actual winner ;) The mood, feeling created here was just perfect!

  • justcallmenobody Said:

Ranganr, chainz : Thank you for the nice comments... I know that my video was a "less widely accepted" concept... but I took the risk to do it. I deeply beleive that art is all about that, taking risks and trying to deliver something that is not the standard, that rise above the rest. I'm not saying that my video is art, or that it's better... I'm just saying that it was what I was aiming for ! I hope i somewhat reached that goal. I tryed to trace in 60 secs a glimpse of the Linux history and evolution, and leaving an open message for the future... I'm kind of happy with the result for the short time I had to make this... I hope I will do better next time. Peace everyone, A.

Antony: I see where you are coming from and feel the same. It is an amazing video none the less. But loses a bit of it's magic knowing it was made with software on another plaform. It's like using Domino's kitchen to make a Pizza Hut Pizza. Yeah the pizza tastes the same maybe even better, but then why am I eating at Pizza Hut? That's a horrible analogy I guess... Will they have this contest again next year? If so, I'd be using Processing, Ardour, and Kdenlive. I had no idea this contest was going on.
